FormuLearn launches feasibility study with support from the SNN

At FormuLearn we work towards one mission: making STEM education better and more accessible. Mathematical formulas are a persistent stumbling block, where one source uses a symbol one way and another does it completely differently. On top of that, digital learning tools are often underused because their quality and reliability fall short. We want to tackle both problems.

To find out whether our solution is feasible, we applied for the MKB feasibility voucher (MKB-haalbaarheidsvoucher) from the SNN, the Northern Netherlands Alliance. The SNN supports entrepreneurs in Drenthe, Friesland and Groningen in bringing innovative ideas to life, made possible in part by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF).

A key element of the scheme is working with a proeftuin (testing ground): an innovative partner that brings knowledge, expertise and facilities. For our project we are teaming up with the IT-HUB in Hoogeveen, who specialise in connecting IT with the business world and have a strong network in education.

Our central question is whether it is technically feasible to automatically generate our standardised format for formulas and use it within lectures and curricula. Alongside the technical side, we are examining the economic angle and the privacy and security aspects, structured in phases with clear go and no-go moments. This is an important first step towards turning our ambition into a reliable, scalable product.
